Stopping the press within a few cycles of the lubrication system going dry certainly beats replacing damaged tooling and discarding a bin of suspect parts because the operator didn’t notice.
This was an actual situation experienced by personnel from OES Inc. while working at a customer location with the EFM4000 process variation monitor for end forming. “The person running the press insisted everything was fine, “the parts are OK”, but our people told the operator that the process had changed and needed to be checked” relates Scott Thomson, Business Development representative for OES Inc. “She checked the press and found the oil reservoir had run dry, so the press was end forming fluid system tubing without any lubrication. She would have continued on punching out parts for who knows how long until there was noticeable damage to the tooling or the parts. The EFM4000 monitor picked up the process change in only a few cycles.”
The process variation monitoring systems for fluid handling from OES allow manufacturers of crimped hose or end formed tubing the opportunity for monitoring 100% of parts without additional production or inspection time. The system has the ability to detect process variations that can result in production flaws at the source before additional manufacturing value is added, and can be networked to log data for generating reports of critical information for traceability and improvements in efficiency. “Our customers tell us that by utilizing this technology, they can have confidence they are providing parts to their customers that have been monitored for quality with the utmost in precision”, says Michael Reeve, Vice-President of OES Inc.
Reeve goes on to report that this technology is on the cutting edge of quality assessment in the manufacturing of fluid handling parts. It has proven itself in the wire harness industry with successful deployment on 1000’s of wire crimping machines. “Making the industry aware of the capabilities of this technology provides an opportunity for manufacturers to assess how the latest in-process monitoring technology can assist in meeting the exacting quality standards of their customers”, he says.
OES is an experienced leader with in-process quality monitoring technologies, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2005. OES Inc. develops and deploys many extremely effective “in-process test and monitoring” solutions for a wide range of applications, including wire crimping, tube end-forming, crimp forming, riveting, and other pressing and forming applications.
